CAMP mentors - if you are currently working in the legal/judiciary field please post a quick hello to this discussion so students will know you are available for discussion about this career field.
I am here to discuss with students who are thinking about pursuing a legal career. I came out of high school thinking I knew what I wanted to do. I soon learned that I did not. I took a year off and then went to GCC in 1981. I graduated from GCC in 1983 with a BA in CJ and LA. I subsequently went to Northeastern University (which accepted all my credits) and graduated five quarters later. I believed that I was going to stay in the Criminal Justice field. I got a lucky break on my first coop at Northeastern, working at a police training academy. That job opened a door into the DA's office in Springfield. It was at that time, with much good fortune, that I was able to work in the DA's office all through law school. I believed I was going to be a career prosecutor. The economy in 1988 brought me to the conclusion that working for less than $30,000 a year with student loans was not the way to go. I subsequently joined a small firm in Wallingford, Ct. (I could have landed a job as a prosecutor, however I made the decision to try general practice. A decision that I have never regretted.) The firm I worked for split up within 18 months. I decided to give general practice a go on my own. Soon I had two staff, and associate, and a great little business. I subsequently moved back to Shelburne Falls area starting another office in town here. I did both for approximately 9 years. For the last four years I have only been working in Massachusetts. I still maintain my license in Ct. as well.
Having said all that..... what I have learned is that you have to take advantage of all opportunities available to you. When a door opens, don't be afraid to go through it and give it a go. I look forward to having discussion with any serious person who is thinking about law as a career. It is a great way to make a living. At least I think so.
